What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a 2000+ year old healing art.
I use hair thin solid needles to adjust and align the natural energetic substance that flows through our body - known as Qi (pronounced chee).
The Qi enlivens all processes in which our system engages, like:
Breathing
Sleeping and waking
Eating and digesting
Working and playing
Reproducing
Etc.
Acupuncture can include additional techniques like
Moxibustion
Electric stimulation
Bodywork techniques like Tui Na and Gua Sha
Cupping

What to Expect
The session begins with an intake, questions about why you have come. These questions cover many aspects of your health and life that may contribute to how you are feeling. Some of the questions may seem unrelated to your complaint, but they help to create a more complete picture of your life and health.
I will feel your pulses and look at your tongue. These are standard diagnostic techniques in Asian medicine. I may also palpate acupuncture points or around a painful area.
The needles will be inserted and left in place for a few minutes and then removed. New, sterile, disposable needles are used for each session.
For pain, needles may be placed directly at the area that is painful and at a distance. The needles at a distance help to balance the overall system and move the qi.
Most needles will be left in place for a few minutes and then removed.
You may be sent home with magnets, seeds or tacks, usually in the ears. I will ask you agree to remove them yourself or return within 3 or 4 days.
You may feel different immediately after your session or it may take several sessions for longer term problems to change.
Sometimes people feel great after the session and occasionally, they feel a bit worse for the next 24 hours or so. Feeling worse means that a shift is happening in the system. This is actually a good sign.
Especially with symptoms that have continued for a while, the relief may only last for a few days. I recommend that you return for treatment two to three times a week. That more frequent treatment creates a momentum that resolves the symptoms much more quickly.
Please be aware that long standing symptoms are likely to take time to resolve.Phyllis H. Abend, LMT, RPP, CH, LAc
